Full title and description
IEC/IEEE 60079-30-1:2025 — Explosive atmospheres - Part 30-1: Electrical resistance trace heating - General and testing requirements. This joint IEC/IEEE standard specifies general construction, performance and testing requirements for electrical resistance trace heating products and assemblies intended for use in locations where explosive atmospheres may occur, and includes requirements for termination assemblies and control methods used with trace heating systems.
Abstract
This second edition (2025) is a technical revision of the 2015 edition and defines the general and testing requirements for series and parallel trace heaters, trace heater pads and panels, whether factory- or field-assembled, when intended for use in explosive atmospheres. The document excludes equipment allocated to certain Equipment Protection Levels (EPL Ga, Da, Ma and Mb) and references area classification guidance in IEC 60079-10-1 and IEC 60079-10-2. Annexes address application using the Division method of area classification.
General information
- Status: Active standard.
- Publication date: 15 September 2025 (IEC publication) — also listed in IEEE records with a December 2025 publication/board-approval timeline (December 10–19, 2025).
- Publisher: Joint IEC / IEEE publication (published via IEC webstore and IEEE Standards Association).
- ICS / categories: 29.260.20 (Equipment for explosive atmospheres).
- Edition / version: Edition 2.0 (2025) — cancels and replaces IEC/IEEE 60079-30-1:2015.
- Number of pages: 77 pages (official IEC PDF/print listing).
Scope
The standard specifies general and testing requirements for electrical resistance trace heaters intended for use in explosive atmospheres, excluding equipment intended for the highest EPLs (Ga, Da, Ma and Mb). It applies to factory- and field-assembled trace heating products — including series and parallel trace heaters, trace heater pads and panels — and covers termination assemblies, control and monitoring methods. Explosive-atmosphere definitions and area-classification references are those given in IEC 60079-10-1 and IEC 60079-10-2; annexes provide guidance for users applying the Division method of area classification.
Key topics and requirements
- General construction and marking requirements for electrical resistance trace heating systems intended for explosive atmospheres.
- Type definitions: series trace heaters, parallel trace heaters, trace heater pads and trace heater panels; factory and field assembly considerations.
- Testing requirements (electrical, thermal, mechanical) used to verify safe operation in hazardous locations.
- Requirements for termination assemblies, joints and connection methods used with trace heating cables and panels.
- Control and monitoring method requirements (safe temperature limitation, overtemperature protection and associated controls).
- Relationship to general explosive-atmosphere requirements (IEC 60079-0) and to area-classification standards (IEC 60079-10-1 / -10-2); priority of this part where it conflicts with IEC 60079-0.
- Annexes addressing application using the Division method and other informative guidance for users.
Typical use and users
Manufacturers and designers of electrical resistance trace heating products; component and termination manufacturers; certification and testing laboratories; plant and reliability engineers in oil, gas, petrochemical and chemical industries; contractors and installers of heat-tracing systems; compliance and safety managers responsible for equipment selection in hazardous locations. The standard is used for product qualification, type testing, design verification and to support installation guidance when paired with application guidance documents.
Related standards
Key related documents include IEC 60079-0 (general requirements for explosive atmospheres), IEC 60079-10-1 and IEC 60079-10-2 (area classification), IEC/IEEE 60079-30-2 (application guidance for trace heating — design, installation and maintenance), and relevant regional standards and installation codes (for example national electrical codes and IEEE trace-heating guidance such as IEEE Std 515 series). This part supplements and takes precedence over IEC 60079-0 where differences occur.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: IEC/IEEE 60079-30-1:2025 is the international standard that sets general and testing requirements for electrical resistance trace heating products intended for use in explosive atmospheres. It is a joint IEC/IEEE publication (Edition 2.0, 2025).
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers construction, marking and testing requirements for series and parallel trace heaters, trace heater pads and panels (factory- or field-assembled), requirements for termination assemblies and control/monitoring methods, and references area classification standards; it excludes equipment intended for certain EPLs (Ga, Da, Ma, Mb).
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Product manufacturers, testing/certification bodies, design and maintenance engineers in oil & gas, petrochemical, and other industries with potentially explosive atmospheres, as well as installers and safety/compliance personnel.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: This 2025 edition is current and supersedes IEC/IEEE 60079-30-1:2015; it is published as Edition 2.0 (2025). Users should confirm national adoptions or harmonized versions that may have different publication dates.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — it is Part 30-1 of the IEC 60079 series (explosive atmospheres). Part 30-2 provides complementary application guidance (design, installation and maintenance) for trace heating systems and other parts of IEC 60079 cover general requirements and area classification.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Electrical resistance trace heating, heat tracing, trace heater pads, termination assemblies, testing requirements, explosive atmospheres, zone/division classification, IEC 60079, IEEE.
