Overview
EN ISO 10807:1996 (ISO 10807:1994) specifies design, materials, testing and marking requirements for corrugated flexible metallic hose assemblies used to protect electrical cables in explosive atmospheres or where there is a fire risk. The standard covers hoses used as static protection or for cables moved infrequently (occasionally or less than once per week), and includes instructions for use and the type-approval tests required for certification.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and usage: Protection of electrical wire and cable in explosive or fire-risk atmospheres; suitable for static or infrequently moved cables.
- Materials:
- Metallic hose: copper alloy (≥94% copper) or austenitic stainless steel.
- End fittings: non-alloy steel or austenitic stainless steel.
- Braiding: bronze wire or austenitic stainless steel.
- Manufacturing and joints: Acceptable joining methods include brazing and electric welding (MIG, MAG, TIG), microplasma and impulse welding. Adhesive bonding and tin soldering are excluded.
- Dimensions & performance: Internal diameters, minimum bend radii and performance classes are defined (see standard’s tables for DN-specific values). End fittings, thread types and total hose lengths are specified.
- Inspection & testing:
- Manufacturer inspections: dimensional, visual and hydraulic testing.
- Hydraulic test: minimum 40 bar for at least 60 seconds with no leakage.
- Type-approval tests (Annex B): flexural strength and bending fatigue tests using specified sample sizes and test conditions. Bending fatigue requires a minimum of 10,000 cycles; fatigue test pressure typically 1 bar, with controlled bending amplitude and rate.
- Finish & marking:
- Internal surfaces must be free of burrs and sharp edges.
- Marking must include manufacturer, reference to EN ISO 10807, year of production and class of location.
Applications and who uses this standard
- Electrical engineers and specifiers designing installations in hazardous areas (ATEX/explosion-risk zones).
- Manufacturers of corrugated flexible metallic hose assemblies and end fittings for cable protection.
- Certification bodies and testing laboratories performing type approval and conformity testing.
- Installers, maintenance teams and safety assessors specifying appropriate cable protection for industrial, offshore and corrosive environments.
