Overview
EN ISO 11111-3:2005 - Textile machinery: Safety requirements - Part 3: Nonwoven machinery specifies significant hazards and corresponding safety requirements for nonwoven textile machinery. Published by CEN as an adoption of ISO 11111-3:2005, it is intended to be used together with ISO 11111-1, ISO 11111-2, ISO 11111-6 and ISO 11111-7. The standard covers machines, plant and equipment used for opening, cleaning, blending, carding, needle punching, cylinder drying and batching of nonwoven materials. It identifies hazards, prescribes protective measures, and addresses verification and information for safe use.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and hazard identification
- Lists significant hazards specific to nonwoven machinery and refers to common textile machinery hazards handled in ISO 11111-1.
- Machine-specific safety measures
- Safety requirements for operations such as opening, cleaning, blending, carding, needle punching, cylinder drying and batching.
- Examples (from carding machines): prevention of access to cross‑folder units, extended full-height fence guards, interlocked guard doors, and guarded conveyor openings to avoid hand/finger access.
- Verification and information
- Requirements for verification of implemented safety measures and for providing user information, including instructions for safe use and maintenance.
- Normative references
- Integrates noise test codes (ISO 9902 series) and safety-distance guidance (ISO 13852).
- Risk assessment
- Where hazards are not fully covered, designers are required to perform a risk assessment (as indicated in the standard series) and apply additional protective measures.
Applications
- Ensures textile machinery safety during design, manufacture and installation of nonwoven production lines.
- Guides machine designers and systems integrators on protective measures such as guarding, interlocks and safe access provisions.
- Supports compliance activities for conformity assessment and can be used to demonstrate alignment with relevant EU Machinery Directive requirements (as noted in the standard’s informative annex).
Who should use this standard
- Machine manufacturers and OEMs of nonwoven machinery
- Safety engineers and compliance officers in textile plants
- Machine designers, system integrators and machine inspectors
- Operators and maintenance personnel (for implementing and following safe working procedures)
