Overview
EN ISO 13350:2015 - Fans: Performance testing of jet fans (adopted by CEN) defines laboratory test methods and reporting requirements for jet fans. The standard specifies the technical characteristics needed to describe jet-fan performance (as defined in ISO 13349) and applies only to non-ducted fans intended to produce a high-velocity jet. It explicitly excludes ducted fans and devices designed solely for air circulation (for example ceiling or table fans). Test procedures are for laboratory conditions; on‑site performance measurement is not covered.
Key topics and technical requirements
EN ISO 13350:2015 addresses the full chain of performance measurement and reporting, including:
- Measured characteristics: thrust, input (motor) power, sound levels, vibration velocity and volume flowrate.
- Instrumentation and measurement: requirements for dimensions/areas, rotational speed, force measurement (force balances and transducers), power measurement (with density correction), acoustic and vibration instrumentation, and pressure/temperature sensors for flowrate.
- Thrust determination: procedures for suspended and supported test configurations, test enclosure design and density corrections.
- Acoustic testing: test arrangement, enclosure suitability and standardized measurement procedures for sound pressure levels.
- Vibration testing: measurement arrangement, procedure and acceptance criteria for vibration velocity.
- Flowrate measurement: upstream chamber method, Pitot traverse and directly connected flow-measuring devices.
- Results and reporting: standardized presentation of product description and performance tables; tolerances and conversion rules.
- Annexes: informative and normative annexes cover reference sound sources, sound-level corrections, non-dimensional coefficients and an efficiency method based on thrust measurements.
Practical applications
EN ISO 13350:2015 is used to:
- Verify and compare jet-fan performance in a repeatable, auditable way.
- Provide manufacturer performance data for product datasheets and procurement specifications.
- Support selection, lab acceptance testing and warranty verification of jet fans used in enclosed-space ventilation systems.
Who should use this standard
- Jet-fan manufacturers and R&D teams testing prototype and production fans.
- Independent test laboratories conducting performance and acoustic certification.
- Specifiers, procurement engineers and consulting engineers writing technical specifications for ventilation systems.
- Regulatory bodies and certification schemes requiring standardized performance data.
