EN ISO 1403:2019 is the CEN-adopted international specification for textile‑reinforced rubber hoses intended for general-purpose water applications. It defines construction, dimensional limits, physical properties, testing and marking for hoses with an operating temperature range of −25 °C to +70 °C and maximum working pressures up to 2,5 MPa (25 bar). These hoses are explicitly not for potable water, washing‑machine inlets, firefighting, certain agricultural machines or collapsible hose uses. They can be used with freeze‑point‑lowering additives.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Classification by pressure
- Type 1 - Low pressure: max working pressure 0,6 MPa (6 bar)
- Type 2 - Medium pressure: max working pressure 1,0 MPa (10 bar)
- Type 3 - High pressure: max working pressure 2,5 MPa (25 bar)
- Materials and construction
- Rubber lining + textile reinforcement (natural or synthetic) + rubber cover
- Cover finish may be smooth, fluted or fabric‑marked
- Minimum combined lining + cover thickness: 1,5 mm
- Dimensions & tolerances
- Inside diameter tolerances specified (e.g., 10 mm ±0,75; 25 mm ±1,25; up to 100 mm ±2,00)
- Concentricity limits: ≤1,0 mm (ID ≤76 mm) or ≤1,5 mm (ID >76 mm)
- Physical & performance tests
- Hydrostatic proof and burst pressures (ISO 1402)
- Compound tensile/elongation and ageing (ISO 37, ISO 188)
- Adhesion between components (ISO 8033) and ozone resistance (ISO 7326)
- Flexibility / stiffness tests at ambient and sub‑ambient temperatures (ISO 10619)
- Marking
- Continuous durable marking must include manufacturer ID, reference to ISO 1403, hose type, inside diameter, max working pressure, and quarter/year of manufacture.
Applications and who uses this standard
- Typical uses: non‑potable water transfer for industry, irrigation (non‑special agricultural machines), general washdown and utility water lines where potable certification is not required.
- Primary users:
- Hose manufacturers and product designers (to design and certify products)
- Quality and test laboratories (to perform ISO‑referenced tests)
- Procurement engineers and specifiers (to select compliant hoses)
- Distributors and maintenance teams (for identification and replacement)
- Benefits: ensures consistent safety margins, interchangeability, documented performance and traceability for water‑service hoses.
