Overview
EN ISO 14919:2023 - Thermal spraying - Wires, rods and cords for flame and arc spraying - Classification and technical supply conditions (ISO 14919:2023) is a CEN-endorsed international standard that defines how consumables used for flame and arc thermal spraying are classified and supplied. It covers metal and non‑metal wires (solid and cored), rods and cords specifically processed for thermal spraying, and replaces the 2015 edition. The document was approved by CEN in November 2023 and is intended for national adoption across CEN members.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Classification by manufacturing process and structure
- Solid wires/rods (metallurgical or powder metallurgy)
- Cored wires (seamless, folded) and powder‑filled types
- Cords (extruded with polymer sheath) and oxide ceramic rods
- Classification by material group and chemical composition
- Material groups include tin, zinc, aluminium, copper, iron, nickel, molybdenum and oxide ceramics
- Detailed composition limits and coded alloy designations (tables for Sn, Zn, Al, Cu, etc.)
- Recent addition of ZnAl2, ZnAl4 and ZnAl22 alloys in the 2023 edition
- Sizes, tolerances and mechanical/surface properties
- Dimensional tolerances, mechanical characteristics and surface quality expectations
- Workability guidance (e.g., winding, handling) relevant to feedability in arc/flame spray equipment
- Designation and technical supply conditions
- Forms of delivery, identification, packaging, storage and traceability requirements
- Inspection documents and referencing to related delivery standards
- Normative references
- Includes references such as ISO 544 (filler materials - delivery conditions) and ISO 10474 (inspection documents)
Applications and users
Who benefits from EN ISO 14919:
- Thermal spray material manufacturers and formulators (wires, rods, cored wires, cords)
- Coating specifiers, design engineers and surface treatment consultants
- Quality, procurement and inspection teams managing supplier contracts and traceability
- End users in industries such as aerospace, automotive, marine, oil & gas, power generation and corrosion protection
What it’s used for:
- Selecting appropriate spray consumables by material and form for arc or flame spraying
- Specifying chemical composition, dimensions and supply conditions in purchase orders
- Ensuring consistent feedability, coating performance and inspection/traceability of consumables
