Overview
EN ISO 15493:2003/A1:2017 (CEN adoption of ISO 15493:2003 with Amendment 1) specifies requirements for plastics piping systems for industrial applications made from ABS, PVC‑U and PVC‑C. It is a metric‑series standard covering materials, component specifications, system performance and required tests. Amendment 1 updates material declarations, hydrostatic strength, adhesive requirements and several test‑related tables and annex clauses to reflect current industry practice and includes a European Foreword reference to an earlier ISO corrigendum.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and materials
- Applies to piping components manufactured from ABS, unplasticized PVC (PVC‑U) and chlorinated PVC (PVC‑C), including permitted additives for manufacture.
- Material properties
- For PVC‑C the amendment specifies density 1 450–1 650 kg/m3 and chlorine ≥ 55% by mass (conformity declared by raw‑material producer).
- Thermal stability
- Thermal stability for pipes judged by internal‑pressure tests (e.g., 95 °C, ≥ 8 760 h, 3.6 MPa for pipes; fittings with corresponding conditions at 90 °C, ≥ 8 760 h, 3.1 MPa).
- Hydrostatic/internal‑pressure testing
- Updated internal‑pressure test conditions and required hoop stresses/durations for pipes and fittings (amendment replaces Tables C.8, C.11, etc.). Examples include high‑stress short‑term and long‑duration tests in accordance with ISO 1167 and ISO 12092.
- Adhesives and solvent cementing
- Adhesive(s) shall be as recommended by the component manufacturer and must not cause assemblies to fail the referenced annex tests. The amendment also removes certain detailed tapered socket dimensions for solvent cementing.
- Physical tests
- References to Vicat softening temperature testing with allowance for annealing samples per manufacturer recommendations.
- Referenced test standards
Applications and users
- Practical use: selection, design, manufacturing and quality control of industrial piping systems carrying water, chemicals and other fluids where ABS, PVC‑U or PVC‑C are appropriate.
- Typical users:
- Pipe, fitting and valve manufacturers
- Product designers and system specifiers in chemical and process industries
- Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies
- Procurement teams and regulators creating technical specifications
