Overview
EN ISO 18273:2015 - "Welding consumables - Wire electrodes, wires and rods for welding of aluminium and aluminium alloys - Classification" (adopted by CEN) defines a standardized system for classifying solid aluminium welding wires and rods used in fusion welding. The classification is based primarily on chemical composition and also identifies the product form (solid wire or rod). This edition (ISO 18273:2015 / EN ISO 18273:2015) supersedes the 2004 version and aligns compositional limits with those registered by the Aluminium Association.
Key Topics
- Scope: Applies to solid wires and rods intended as filler materials for fusion welding of aluminium and aluminium alloys.
- Classification scheme:
- Two-part designation: a symbol for product form (wire/rod) and a numerical symbol indicating the chemical composition.
- A comprehensive table (Table 1) lists alloy symbols (e.g., Al4043, Al5356, Al5183, Al4047, etc.) and their permitted chemical composition ranges.
- Consumables not listed are designated with a Z-prefix (Z + agreed symbol), noting that different Z-designated consumables may not be interchangeable.
- Technical requirements and content:
- Symbols for product form and composition.
- Requirements for mechanical properties of weld metal, chemical analysis, rounding procedures, and retesting.
- Technical delivery conditions and rules for designation (marking/labeling) of consumables.
- Normative references: Links to ISO 544 (delivery conditions for filler materials), ISO 14344 (procurement of filler materials), and ISO 80000-1 (quantities and units).
Applications and Users
- Practical use:
- Establishes unambiguous identification and interchangeability criteria for aluminium filler wires/rods in specifications, procurement and quality control.
- Helps ensure correct filler selection for joining aluminium components, supporting consistent weld chemistry and predictable weld properties.
- Primary users:
- Welding engineers, welding consumable manufacturers, procurement/specification writers, QA/QC inspectors, and metal fabricators in industries using aluminium (aerospace, automotive, shipbuilding, rail, and general manufacture).
- Benefits:
- Streamlines sourcing and certification of filler materials, reduces specification errors, and supports conformity with accepted alloy limits.
