Overview
EN ISO 2440:2025 - Flexible and rigid cellular polymeric materials - Accelerated ageing tests (ISO 2440:2025) specifies laboratory procedures to simulate naturally occurring degradation mechanisms (for example oxidation and hydrolysis by humidity) for flexible and rigid cellular polymeric materials. The standard provides controlled accelerated ageing tests (dry heat and humidity ageing) and guidance for measuring changes in physical properties of foams and cellular polymers before and after treatment. This edition (2025) supersedes EN ISO 2440:2019 and was prepared by ISO/TC 45 in collaboration with CEN/TC 249.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and materials covered: open-cell latex, open- and closed-cell polyurethane foams, closed-cell polyolefin foams; tests may also be applied to composite constructions.
- Ageing procedures:
- Dry heat ageing - use of ovens with forced circulation; temperature control to within ±3 °C and preferably continuous temperature recording.
- Humidity ageing - use of humidity ageing apparatus sized so test piece volume ≤ 10% of free air space and specimens remain free of strain and freely exposed.
- Test pieces and conditioning: requirements for number, size, shape and pre-test conditioning; normative reference to ISO 23529 for specimen preparation.
- Measured properties: changes in tensile/elongation, compression, or indentation hardness are typical targets; expressed as percentage change between pre- and post-ageing averages.
- Procedure elements: general instructions, reconditioning, calculation and expression of results, validity checks.
- Quality and reproducibility: Clause on precision data and Annex B provides precision information; Annex A gives a method for verification of ageing result validity.
- Documentation: required test report elements are specified (Clause 9).
Applications and practical value
- Product development and material selection - assess long-term behaviour of foams under simulated oxidation or humidity conditions.
- Quality control and batch acceptance - compare performance before/after accelerated ageing to detect degradation trends.
- Failure analysis and durability testing - investigate interactions in composite structures or finished products containing cellular polymeric materials.
- Research & development - evaluate formulations, stabilisers, or barrier layers for improved resistance to heat or humidity.
- Regulatory and procurement specifications - provide reproducible test methods for contract specifications and compliance.
