Overview
EN ISO 3183:2019 (ISO 3183:2019) specifies manufacturing and supplementary requirements for seamless and welded steel pipes used in pipeline transportation systems in the petroleum and natural gas industries. The standard covers two product specification levels - PSL 1 and PSL 2 - and is intended for line pipe applications (not applicable to cast pipe). EN ISO 3183:2019 is a CEN-endorsed version of the ISO publication and supplements API Spec 5L, 46th edition (2018), applying API requirements with the exceptions and additions defined in this document.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Product specification levels (PSL 1 & PSL 2): Defines manufacturing and testing expectations for each PSL to ensure consistent pipe quality for pipeline transportation.
- Seamless and welded pipe: Requirements apply to both manufacturing routes; welded pipe weld seams and associated testing are addressed.
- Supplementary requirements to API Spec 5L: EN ISO 3183:2019 references API Spec 5L (46th ed.) and adds or modifies clauses (marking, purchaser information, and specific technical supplements).
- Testing and NDT: Normative references include ISO and EN test methods commonly used for verification - e.g., Charpy impact (ISO 148-1), tensile testing (ISO 6892-1), various automated NDT methods for tubes (ISO 10893 series), radiographic image quality (ISO 19232-1), and NDT personnel qualification (ISO 9712).
- Manufacturing tolerances and controls: Updates and clarifications cover straightness, end squareness, impact test-piece sizing, hardness-test location, and heat treatment requirements related to welds.
- Special annexes: Annex A (formerly Annex M) applies for PSL 2 pipe ordered for European onshore natural gas transmission pipelines; a new Annex N addresses PSL 2 applications requiring longitudinal plastic strain capacity.
- Marking and purchaser information: Two marking options (ISO 3183 marking or API 5L with additional “ISO 3183” marking) and specific purchase-order information requirements are defined.
Applications and who uses it
- Pipeline manufacturers and mills producing seamless and welded steel line pipe.
- Pipeline operators and EPC contractors specifying line pipe for petroleum and natural gas transmission systems.
- Procurement and quality teams issuing purchase orders and inspection documentation.
- NDT personnel, inspectors, and certification bodies implementing referenced test and inspection requirements.
- Regulators and standards committees harmonizing pipeline material requirements across jurisdictions.
