Overview
EN ISO 3452-3:2013 - "Non-destructive testing - Penetrant testing - Part 3: Reference test blocks" (CEN endorsed) specifies the design, construction and identification of reference test blocks used to assess and calibrate penetrant testing (PT) systems. The standard defines two types of reference blocks and requires their use in accordance with ISO 3452-1 (general principles). This part is intended for use with both fluorescent penetrant and colour contrast penetrant methods.

- Defect area: plated with electroless nickel 60 µm ± 3 µm and a thin hard chromium 0.5–1.5 µm; heat-treated to reach specified hardnesses (nickel HV0.2 ≈ 500–600; post-chrome heat treatment to HV0.3 ≈ 900–1 000).
- Five equidistant artificial indentations (created from the reverse side) with applied forces typically 2.0, 3.5, 5.0, 6.5, 8.0 kN and typical defect diameters ≈ 3–5.5 mm.
- Documentation and identification
- Each block must be identified with the ISO number, supplier ID and serial number.
- A Type 3.1 certificate (ISO 10474 / EN 10204) must accompany each block showing measured defect sizes and rinsability roughness values.
