Overview
EN ISO 3834-1:2021 - "Quality requirements for fusion welding of metallic materials - Part 1" - sets out the criteria for selecting the appropriate level of welding quality requirements within the ISO 3834 series. It provides a general outline of ISO 3834 and guidance to choose one of the three levels of quality requirements defined in ISO 3834-2, ISO 3834-3 and ISO 3834-4. Applicable to manufacturing both in workshops and at field installation sites, EN ISO 3834-1:2021 helps manufacturers, specifiers and assessors determine the right welding quality regime for a given product, construction or contractual requirement. The document is not a full quality management system (QMS) standard, but Clause 6 identifies QMS elements that complement the ISO 3834 series.
Key Topics
- General outline of the ISO 3834 series and how the parts interrelate.
- Criteria for selection of the appropriate level of quality requirements (linking product characteristics, regulatory and contractual demands to ISO 3834-2/3/4).
- Guidance for application in both workshop and on-site (field) fusion welding activities.
- QMS elements to complement ISO 3834 (Clause 6) - noting EN ISO 3834-1 is not a substitute for ISO 9001 but can be used together.
- Normative references and terminology (references include ISO 9000:2015 and the ISO/TR 25901 series).
- Annex A (informative): lists criteria that assist in choosing ISO 3834-2, -3 or -4.
Applications
Who uses EN ISO 3834-1:2021 and why:
- Manufacturers and fabricators - to determine the correct level of welding quality requirements for products ranging from simple assemblies to safety-critical constructions (pressure vessels, bridges, transport vehicles).
- Welding coordinators and quality managers - to justify and document the selection of ISO 3834 level in contracts and technical files.
- Procurement and specifiers - to include appropriate welding quality clauses in purchase specifications and product standards.
- Third-party assessors and certification bodies - to assess a manufacturer’s capability to meet specified welding quality levels.
- Standards committees and regulators - to reference consistent selection criteria in codes and regulations.
Practical value: use EN ISO 3834-1:2021 to align welding controls with product risk, contractual and regulatory requirements, and to ensure consistent assessment and communication of welding quality expectations.
