EN ISO 5353:1998 (ISO 5353:1995) specifies a uniform method and the measuring device for determining the Seat Index Point (SIP) for seats used in earth‑moving machinery and in tractors and machinery for agriculture and forestry. The SIP is a defined point on the central vertical plane of a seat that serves as a reference for operator workspace design, ergonomics and safety assessments. This standard defines the device, seating preparation, adjustment procedures and reporting requirements to ensure reproducible SIP measurements.

- Cover seat with a single layer of muslin to minimize friction.

- Place seat adjustments (fore/aft, vertical, angular) at centre positions where applicable.
- Block suspension per manufacturer’s instructions or at midpoint of its oscillation range.

- Place device centrally, ensure it is level and laterally controlled.
- Take measurements on both sides at equal distances from the central plane and average.
- Record SIP coordinates relative to the manufacturer’s fixing point to ±1 mm.
- Reporting: Include reference to the standard, any deviations, test conditions, a drawing/sketch showing coordinates between fixing point and SIP, and descriptions of relevant adjustment ranges.
