Overview
EN ISO 544:2024 - Welding consumables: Technical delivery conditions for filler materials and fluxes - defines the product types, dimensions and tolerances, and marking and packaging requirements for filler metals and fluxes used in fusion welding. Published by CEN as the European adoption of ISO 544:2024 (sixth edition), this document updates and supersedes EN ISO 544:2017. It covers solid wires, wire electrodes, tubular cored wires/electrodes, rods, strips, covered electrodes and fluxes, but explicitly excludes auxiliary materials such as shielding gases.
Key Topics
- Product types and welding processes
- Lists covered products and the welding processes in which they are used (e.g., solid wire, tubular cored wire, covered electrodes, thin foils) with ISO 4063 process references.
- Dimensions and tolerances
- Specifies dimensional requirements and tolerances for wires, rods and covered electrodes (see Table 2), and for solid strip electrodes (see Table 3).
- Notes requirements for cored strip electrodes and thin foils to follow relevant application standards.
- Flux requirements
- Defines general characteristics for fluxes (granular form, free conveyance in flux-feed systems) and particle size distribution considerations.
- Condition and rounding procedures
- Covers condition on delivery for covered electrodes, wires, rods and strips, and includes rounding procedures where applicable.
- Marking and packaging
- Requirements for marking directly on the product (electrodes, wires, rods) and on packaging, plus packaging and inspection document expectations.
- Normative references
Applications
- Manufacturers use EN ISO 544:2024 to set production, finishing and marking processes for welding consumables to ensure conformity with European and international delivery conditions.
- Purchasers and procurement teams specify the standard in tender documents and purchase orders to control quality and interchangeability of filler materials and fluxes.
- Welding engineers and QA/QC inspectors reference the standard when verifying dimensional tolerances, packaging, marking and delivery condition during receipt inspection.
- Standards committees and regulatory bodies use it to align national rules with CEN/ISO requirements.
Who should use it: welding consumable manufacturers, welding engineers, procurement specialists, quality managers, and conformity assessment bodies.
