Overview
EN ISO 6134:2024 - Rubber hoses and hose assemblies for saturated steam - Specification - sets requirements for rubber hoses, hose assemblies and metal fittings intended to convey saturated steam and hot water condensate. Published by CEN as the EN adoption of ISO 6134:2024 (fifth edition, June 2024), it supersedes EN ISO 6134:2017 and defines material, construction, testing, marking and storage rules for steam-rated rubber hoses.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & classification
- Two types by maximum working pressure:
- Type 1 (low pressure): 0.6 MPa (6 bar) - up to 164 °C
- Type 2 (high pressure): 1.8 MPa (18 bar) - up to 210 °C
- Two cover classes:
- Class A: non-oil-resistant cover
- Class B: oil-resistant cover
- Electrical options: electrically bonded (M) or electrically conductive (Ω)
- Materials & construction
- Steam-resistant rubber lining
- Reinforcement: textile for Type 1; steel wire (braided/spiral/cord ply) for Type 2
- Covers designed to resist heat, abrasion, weather and short-term chemicals
- Safety & operational requirements
- Quick-release couplings prohibited
- End fittings must allow tightening adjustment (compensate for rubber creep)
- Warnings on reduced service life under superheated steam and vacuum “popcorning” risks
- Testing, dimensions & performance
- Requirements for dimensions, bend radii, concentricity, physical properties and steam resistance
- Tests include hydrostatic testing, steam resistance (short/long-term), electrical resistance, bending and abrasion
- Type testing, routine testing and test frequency, plus marking and storage requirements
Applications
EN ISO 6134:2024 is applicable where safe, reliable conveyance of saturated steam and condensate is required, for example:
- Steam distribution from boilers and steam plants
- Industrial steam cleaning and heating systems
- Sterilizers and process equipment in manufacturing and food processing
- HVAC and maintenance operations requiring steam hose assemblies
Who should use this standard
- Hose and hose-assembly manufacturers and suppliers
- Plant and mechanical engineers specifying steam connections
- Procurement and quality departments verifying conformity
- Test laboratories and conformity assessors
- Maintenance personnel managing hose replacement and storage
