Overview
EN ISO 7142:2023 - published by CEN and identical to ISO 7142:2023 - defines general methods of test for epoxy resins used as binders for paints and varnishes. The standard specifies sampling, a set of agreed test methods, and reporting requirements for liquid epoxy resins, epoxy resin solutions and resins intended as binders. It explicitly excludes epoxy esters. This edition supersedes EN ISO 7142:2007 and contains editorial updates and a revised normative method for hydroxyl value determination.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and sampling: Representative sampling is required according to ISO 15528.
- Mandatory properties and test methods (see Table 1 in the standard):
- Special provisions: Solid resins should be tested in a standard test solution (40 % mass fraction in diethylene glycol mono‑n‑butylether) and the solvent/concentration must be reported.
- Test report requirements: include product identification, reference to ISO 7142:2023, test results and methods, any deviations or anomalies, and test dates.
Practical applications and users
- Who uses it:
- Paint, varnish and coating manufacturers
- Raw material suppliers and resin producers
- Quality control and R&D laboratories
- Procurement and specification engineers
- Regulatory and certification bodies
- Practical value:
- Standardized quality control of epoxy resins and binder solutions
- Clear acceptance criteria for supplier contracts and specifications
- Reliable data for formulation, processing and safety assessments
- Consistent test reporting to support compliance and product development
