Overview
EN ISO 8044:2025 (ISO 8044:2024) - “Corrosion of metals and alloys - Vocabulary” is a CEN-endorsed vocabulary standard that codifies the terminology widely used in corrosion science and technology. It defines core terms (for example, corrosion, corrosion rate, corrosion damage, time of wetness, corrosion system, passivation, pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN)) and supplements many definitions with short explanatory notes. The standard applies IUPAC rules for electrode potential signs and uses the term metal to include alloys and other metallic materials. It supersedes EN ISO 8044:2020 and aligns with ISO 8044:2024.
Key topics
- General corrosion terms: definitions for corrosion, corrosive agent/environment, corrosion effect/damage/failure, corrosion product, scale, rust, corrosion depth and rate.
- Types of corrosion: vocabulary covering localized corrosion (pitting, crevice), atmospheric corrosion, high-temperature oxidation, stress corrosion cracking terms and thresholds.
- Corrosion protection: terms related to protective systems, serviceability, durability, service life and corrosion resistance.
- Corrosion testing: standardized test terminology used in laboratory and field assessments.
- Electrochemical matters: electrochemical cell, reaction rates, passivation, electrochemical protection and electrochemical corrosion tests; IUPAC electrode potential sign conventions are applied.
- Ancillary content: Annex A with graphical representations of certain terms, cross-references to related terms and a bibliography.
Practical applications
EN ISO 8044:2025 is a reference vocabulary used to ensure consistent communication and specification across industries that deal with metallic materials and corrosion:
- Corrosion engineers and materials scientists - for consistent reporting of corrosion mechanisms, rates and failure modes.
- Testing laboratories and accreditation bodies - to standardize test descriptions and interpretation of results.
- Asset owners and operators (oil & gas, marine, infrastructure, transport, power plants) - to write unambiguous procurement and maintenance specifications.
- Coatings and metallurgical manufacturers - to describe product performance, protection strategies and compatibility with testing standards.
- Standards writers and regulatory bodies - as the authoritative terminology to align other standards and technical documents.
Related standards
- ISO 2080 - terms for inorganic surface treatment of metals (cross-referenced).
- EN/ISO test methods and sector-specific corrosion standards typically rely on the vocabulary defined in ISO 8044 for clarity.
Using EN ISO 8044:2025 in specifications, test reports and technical discussions reduces ambiguity, improves international interoperability and supports accurate risk assessment and maintenance planning for metallic systems.
