Overview
EN ISO 8849:2021 (identical to ISO 8849:2020) specifies requirements for electrically operated bilge pumps for small craft. The standard applies to:
- DC bilge pumps with nominal voltage ≤ 50 V, and
- Single‑phase AC bilge pumps with nominal voltage ≤ 250 V.
It is focused on pumps intended to remove bilge water and explicitly does not cover pumps intended for damage control. The third edition updated the scope and added a clause on the owner’s manual.
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard defines functional, electrical and safety requirements that manufacturers, installers and inspectors should follow:
- Performance ratings: Pumps must be rated in litres per minute/hour at nominal voltage for static heads of 0 m, 1 m and 2 m (0, 10 kPa, 20 kPa). Ratings and maximum output lift must appear in the instructions.
- Continuous operation: Pumps shall operate continuously for 24 h at 87.5% of nominal voltage within recommended performance ranges.
- Dry‑run capability / fire safety:
- Centrifugal and axial flow pumps: capable of dry operation for at least 7 h at design voltage without creating a fire hazard, or provide automatic shut‑off.
- Positive/semi‑positive displacement pumps: withstand 5 min dry operation without damage and 1 h without fire hazard; owner’s manual must warn against >1 min dry running, or provide automatic shut‑off.
- Materials and corrosion resistance: Components in contact with seawater must be corrosion‑resistant, galvanically compatible and resistant to petrol, oil, diesel and bilge cleaners.
- Submersible pumps: Require inlet strainers or cleanable screens and watertight electrical connections (IP67) per IEC 60529; use of sealed cable sections to keep final connections above critical bilge level is recommended.
- Electrical safety & marking:
- Compliance with ignition protection (ISO 8846) where explosive vapours may accumulate.
- Electrical requirements and installation guidance per ISO 13297.
- Pumps must include installation/operating instructions, wiring diagrams, recommended overcurrent protection and secure mounting means.
- Documentation: Clause 7 requires a user/operator manual and clear markings.

EN ISO 8849:2021 is used by:
- Bilge pump manufacturers for design, testing and product documentation.
- Boat builders and marine electricians for correct installation and selection.
- Surveyors, certifiers and regulatory bodies assessing conformity with marine safety rules and Directive 2013/53/EU (see Annex ZA).
