Overview
EN ISO 9647:2022 specifies a standardized analytical procedure for the determination of vanadium content in steel using the flame atomic absorption spectrometric (FAAS) method. Adopted from ISO 9647:2020, this CEN-endorsed standard covers sample preparation, reagents, instrument setup and measurement, and result expression for vanadium mass fractions from 0.01 % to 0.80 %, with restriction that a 1.0 g test portion contains no more than 1.0 % tungsten and/or 0.5 % titanium.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & limits: Applicable range 0.01–0.80 % vanadium (mass fraction); tungsten and titanium limitations to avoid interferences.
- Principle: Dissolution of a test portion in hydrochloric, nitric and perchloric acids, addition of an aluminium chloride spectrochemical buffer, nebulisation into an acetylene/nitrous oxide flame and measurement of atomic absorption at 318.4 nm using a vanadium hollow‑cathode lamp.
- Reagents & standards: Analytical-grade reagents and grade 2 water (ISO 3696). Procedures given for preparing vanadium standard solutions (e.g., 2.0 g/l and a 0.08 g/l working solution).
- Apparatus: Class A volumetric glassware (ISO 648/ISO 1042) and an atomic absorption spectrometer meeting instrumental criteria (precision, limit of detection, calibration linearity and characteristic concentration) as described in Annex C.
- Procedure & calibration: Test portion selection, blank determinations, preparation of calibration solutions, instrument adjustment, and spectrometric measurements. Results may be obtained via a calibration curve or a bracketing method.
- Safety & quality: Explicit warning on perchloric acid hazards and guidance for laboratory practice and sampling (ISO 14284 referenced). Precision data and interlaboratory information are provided in informative annexes.
Applications and who uses it
- Quality control in steel production: Routine monitoring of vanadium additions in alloy steels and tool steels.
- Metallurgical and materials testing laboratories: Accurate determination of V content for certification, acceptance testing and batch control.
- Standards bodies and conformity assessment: Comparative testing, method validation and regulatory compliance.
- Researchers and metallurgists: Alloy development and failure analysis where vanadium concentration impacts properties.
