Overview
IEC 60064:1993 (consolidated with Amendments to 2005) specifies performance requirements for tungsten filament incandescent lamps used for domestic and similar general lighting purposes (GLS). The standard covers lamps that comply with the safety requirements of IEC 60432-1 and defines electrical, photometric, dimensional and life characteristics for typical GLS lamps with bulb shapes A or PS, finishes (clear, frosted, equivalently coated or white), and caps B22d, E26 or E27. Rated wattages covered are 25 W to 200 W and rated voltages 100 V to 250 V (including specified small voltage ranges).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & definitions: precise definitions for type, group, manufacturer, batch, whole production, light centre length and rated values (wattage, voltage, luminous flux).
- Lamp characteristics and data sheets: declared rated luminous flux, wattage and voltage; specific lamp data sheets are included or provided by manufacturers.
- Dimensional requirements: maximum outlines, light centre length (for clear bulbs) and cap interchangeability per cap standards.
- Electrical & photometric requirements: initial readings, tolerances, lumen maintenance and photometric performance after ageing.
- Life and reliability: life test requirements, lumen maintenance criteria and acceptance limits for production.
- Compliance & conformity assessment:
- Whole production appraisal methods for certification based on manufacturer test records.
- Batch testing procedures for assessing specific batches (not intended for certification).
- Sampling plans and statistical tables for inspection, rating and life tests.
- Test procedures and annexes: consolidated test methods, life calculation guidance, recommended pre-compliance tests, statistical concepts and test-rack circuit characteristics.
Practical applications and users
Who uses IEC 60064:
- Lamp manufacturers - to design, rate and document GLS tungsten filament lamps and prepare lamp data sheets.
- Test laboratories & certification bodies - for compliance testing, whole production appraisal and issuing conformity certificates.
- Quality managers & production engineers - to set production acceptance criteria, sampling plans and life-test protocols.
- Procurement teams & regulators - to specify performance criteria in tenders and national regulations.
- Lighting designers & specifiers - as a reference for expected lumen output, life and interchangeability.
Practical uses:
- Product development and quality assurance for incandescent GLS lamps.
- Preparing compliance dossiers for certification schemes.
- Defining acceptance criteria for batch shipments and production lots.
