Overview
IEC 60384-16:2005 is the IEC sectional specification for fixed metallized polypropylene film dielectric d.c. capacitors used in electronic equipment. It defines the scope, preferred ratings and characteristics, and selects quality assessment procedures, tests and measurement methods from the generic IEC 60384-1. The standard covers capacitors with metallized electrodes and polypropylene dielectric that are mainly intended for direct voltage (DC) service. These parts may exhibit self-healing properties depending on use conditions. Note: alternating-voltage and pulse capacitors are excluded (see IEC 60384-17).
Key parameters given in the standard include the maximum power (500 var at 50 Hz) and the maximum peak voltage (2 500 V). Two performance grades are defined: Grade 1 (long-life) and Grade 2 (general application).
Key topics
- Scope and application: metallized polypropylene film DC capacitors; exclusion of AC/pulse and EMI suppression types.
- Preferred ratings & characteristics: standardized capacitance, voltage ratings and tolerances derived from IEC 60063 series and IEC 60384-1.
- Quality assessment procedures: selection of manufacturing and inspection methods including primary manufacture checks, qualification approval, lot-by-lot and periodic inspections.
- Test and measurement methods: visual and dimensional checks; electrical tests (capacitance, dissipation factor, insulation resistance); robustness of terminations; resistance to soldering heat and solderability; environmental tests such as rapid temperature change, vibration, shock, climatic sequence, damp heat and endurance; charge/discharge and solvent resistance tests.
- Performance grades and limits: prescriptions to ensure detail specifications referencing this standard meet equal or higher performance levels.
- Documentation & sampling: use of sampling plans (IEC 60410), certified records and test schedules for qualification.
