Overview
IEC 60519-1:2020 - Safety in installations for electroheating and electromagnetic processing - Part 1: General requirements - defines the general safety framework for industrial installations and equipment used for electroheating (EH) and electromagnetic processing of materials (EPM). This sixth edition (2020) updates the previous 2015 version and focuses on significant hazards, hazardous situations and hazardous events during normal operation, single-fault conditions and reasonably foreseeable misuse. Notable technical changes include removal of noise from the scope, clarification of EMC requirements, risk classification of hazards based on emissions for all processing frequencies, and clearer boundaries between IEC 60519 and ISO 13577.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope and classification: Definitions, classification by processing frequency and voltage, and subdivision of installations and equipment.
- Risk assessment: Identification and assessment of significant hazards (see Annex A), risk classification and mitigation for normal and single-fault conditions.
- Electrical safety: Protection against electric shock, basic and fault protection, protective equipotential bonding, and special provisions for frequencies above 200 Hz.
- Electromagnetic and field hazards: Limits and controls for electric and magnetic near-fields, requirements for barriers, screens and items worn or carried by persons.
- Radiation and thermal hazards: Requirements covering ionizing, ultraviolet, visible/IR and laser radiation plus surface-temperature limits and over-temperature protection.
- Fire, fluids and mechanical hazards: Measures for combustible materials, pressurised/vacuum parts and moving components.
- Control and safety systems: Operator control units, emergency stop, control system safety functions, protective devices and overtemperature/overpressure protections.
- EMC and interference: Clarified radio frequency interference and immunity requirements to ensure safe operation and regulatory compliance.
- Verification and testing: Visual inspection, measurements (fields, touch current, insulation), functional tests, numerical modelling and conformity verification.
Applications and Users
IEC 60519-1:2020 is applicable to manufacturers, plant designers, system integrators, safety engineers, compliance officers and test laboratories working with industrial electroheating and electromagnetic-processing installations. Typical use cases:
- Designing safe induction, RF or microwave heating systems and treatment lines
- Preparing technical safety documentation, risk assessments and user instructions
- Specifying verification, EMC and field-measurement protocols for commissioning and periodic testing
- Ensuring compliance with international safety requirements during installation, maintenance and operation
