Overview
IEC 60974-12:2022 - Arc welding equipment Part 12 - covers coupling devices for welding cables used in arc welding and allied processes. This fourth edition (2022) is a technical revision of the 2011 edition and applies to coupling devices designed for connection and disconnection without tools. It specifies safety, performance and testing requirements for coupling devices (cable-to-cable and cable-to-equipment connectors) and excludes devices intended for underwater welding. Important updates in this edition include an updated Table 1 to include 100% duty cycle data and a more detailed Annex A (dimensions).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & designation
- Devices are designated by the range of welding cable cross-sectional area they accept. Test currents are specified in Table 1 (now expanded to reflect 100% duty cycle options).
- Environmental conditions
- Operable between −10 °C and +40 °C; relative humidity up to 90% at 20 °C.
- Storage and transport resilience between −20 °C and +55 °C.
- Type tests and sequence
- All type tests use a single new, fully assembled device at 10–40 °C.
- Required sequence includes: visual inspection, temperature rise, crush strength, insulation resistance and dielectric strength.
- Electrical safety
- Protection against electric shock: voltage ratings, insulation resistance and dielectric strength are defined (see Table 2 for typical voltage/insulation figures by process - e.g., higher dielectric strength requirements for plasma cutting).
- Arc-striking and arc-stabilizing voltage considerations are addressed.
- Thermal and mechanical performance
- Temperature-rise limits, resistance to hot objects, retaining means, cable entry, insulation penetration, cable-termination integrity and crush strength.
- Marking and instructions
- Marking, user instructions and conformity verification are specified to ensure safe selection and use.
- Dimensional standardization
- Annex A (normative) provides dimensional drawings for male/female elements and locking pin types to support interchangeability.
Practical applications and who uses this standard
IEC 60974-12 is essential for:
- Manufacturers of welding cable connectors and coupling devices (design, compliance, product labeling).
- Welding equipment designers integrating connector interfaces.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies performing type testing and conformity assessment.
- Specifiers, safety officers and procurement teams who need to select compliant connectors for production, maintenance and plant safety.
- Standards engineers aligning product families and ensuring compatibility and interchangeability.
