Overview
IEC 62298-2:2005 - TeleWeb application, Part 2: Delivery methods defines the transmission layer for TeleWeb services. TeleWeb delivers Web-style content to TV-based decoders and the living-room environment. This part specifies how TeleWeb data is carried over broadcast systems - in particular VBI (Teletext) and DVB (MPEG-2 Transport Stream) - and describes delivery profiles, transport protocols and signalling needed so decoders (TVs, set‑top boxes, portable decoders and PCs) can reliably receive and present TeleWeb content.
Key Topics
- Delivery profiles - Defines OSI layers 1–4 mappings for common delivery methods including:
- TeleWeb via Teletext packets in VBI lines
- TeleWeb via PES packets in MPEG‑2 TS
- TeleWeb via DSM‑CC sections in MPEG‑2 TS
- Transport layer protocols - Detailed use of DSM‑CC data carousel for broadcasting files/modules, and the interaction channel for two‑way or signalling traffic.
- DSM‑CC transmission over Teletext - How carousel components are encapsulated in Teletext Independent Data Lines (IDL) and Teletext packet formats referenced to ETSI Teletext specs.
- DVB signalling and transport - Signalling TeleWeb services in DVB tables (Program Map Table PMT and Service Description Table SDT), service detection, multiple service handling and transport via PES or DSM‑CC sections.
- Operational elements - Message sequencing, descriptors, download messages (DDB/DII/DSI concepts), error checking and addressing as applicable to data broadcast.
- Normative references - Interoperability with ISO/IEC 13818 (MPEG‑2, DSM‑CC), ETSI Teletext and DVB specifications.
Applications
- Delivering interactive, HTML‑like or superteletext content to television sets and low‑cost decoders.
- Broadcasting program‑related data (enhanced EPGs, rich graphics, program‑linked information) without requiring Internet connectivity.
- Multiplexing data services alongside traditional audio/video in terrestrial, cable or satellite DVB deployments.
- Useful for broadcasters, middleware vendors, set‑top box and TV manufacturers, system integrators and content/service providers building broadcast‑centric interactive services.
Who Should Use This Standard
- Broadcast engineers implementing TeleWeb or similar data services
- Decoder and middleware designers implementing Teletext/DSM‑CC reception
- Service operators planning DVB/VBI data channels and signalling
- Standards and compliance teams ensuring interoperability with MPEG‑2/DSM‑CC and ETSI Teletext/DVB profiles
