Overview
IEC 63093-8:2018 - Ferrite cores - Guidelines on dimensions and the limits of surface irregularities - Part 8: E-cores - provides standardized guidance for the mechanical and surface quality aspects of E-shaped ferrite cores. The document defines the essential dimensions needed for mechanical interchangeability, specifies dimensional limits for coil formers, gives effective parameter values for engineering calculations, and sets out guidelines on allowable surface irregularities (chips, cracks, flash, pull-outs, pores, crystallites). This edition consolidates and replaces IEC 62317-8:2006 and IEC 60424-3:2015.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Primary dimensions and tolerances: Preferred range of E-core dimensions (see Table 1 in the standard) that ensure mechanical interchangeability of cores and assemblies. Gauging methods and example gauge dimensions are provided in Annex B.
- Coil former limits: Essential dimensional limits for coil formers that mate with E-cores to ensure correct fit and reliable assembly.
- Effective parameters for calculations: Guidance on the effective magnetic parameters (referenced to calculation methods such as IEC 60205) and A-values used in design and performance estimates.
- Surface irregularity criteria: Definitions and allowable limits for chips, ragged edges, cracks, flash, pull-outs, pores and crystallites. Practical guidance helps assess acceptability and supports supplier–customer negotiations.
- Derived standards and informative material: Annex A discusses using derived standards for more detailed component specifications; Annex C (informative) includes the reference table for allowable chip areas moved from IEC 60424-3:2015.
Practical applications and who uses this standard
IEC 63093-8:2018 is intended for:
- Ferrite core manufacturers - to specify product dimensions, quality criteria and communicate allowable surface defects to customers.
- Magnetic component designers and electrical engineers - to select standard E-cores and coil formers and to use consistent effective parameters in transformer and inductor calculations.
- Quality and inspection teams - to set inspection criteria, use the example gauges in Annex B, and evaluate surface irregularities during incoming inspection.
- Purchasing and procurement - to negotiate tolerances and acceptability criteria with suppliers using internationally recognized limits.
- Test laboratories and compliance assessors - to verify mechanical interchangeability and surface quality against IEC requirements.
