Overview
IEC TR 61292-5:2004 is a Technical Report that provides general information on polarization mode dispersion (PMD) for all commercially available optical amplifiers (OAs) - including optical fibre amplifiers (OFAs), semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) and planar waveguide amplifiers (POWA). It focuses on PMD concepts and measurement considerations applicable when testing OAs using the two commonly used PMD test methods: Jones matrix eigenanalysis (JME) and Poincaré sphere analysis (PSA). This report complements the formal test procedure standards IEC 61290-11-1 (JME) and IEC 61290-11-2 (PSA).
Key Topics
- Scope and applicability: PMD background for OAs as classified in IEC 61292-3, including deterministic and stochastic mode coupling behavior.
- Fundamental PMD concepts: principal states of polarization (PSPs), polarization transfer functions (Jones/Stokes formalisms), polarization dispersion vector and differential group delay (DGD) (reported in ps).
- Measurement methods: overview of JME and PSA equivalence and where each method is applied; reference to detailed procedures in IEC 61290-11-1 and IEC 61290-11-2.
- Practical measurement issues:
- Amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) and its effect on measured degree of polarization (DOP) at OA output.
- Source choices: tunable laser source (TLS) vs broadband source (BBS) with tunable filter/optical spectrum analyser (OSA).
- Required DOP: guidance that source and measured DOP should be at least ~25% within the measurement bandwidth; recommended >30% for reliable JME measurements.
- Illustrative numerical examples showing how OA noise factor (F), gain (G) and saturation affect ASE and resulting DOP (e.g., heavily saturated OA -> DOP ~98%; lower saturation -> DOP ~34%).
- Interference and filtering: use of narrow RBW filters, coherence interference and multiple-path interference considerations.
Applications
- Test laboratories and field test engineers evaluating PMD and DGD of optical amplifiers used in telecom and datacom links.
- OA manufacturers validating PMD performance and ensuring compliance with system-level polarization-related requirements.
- System integrators and designers assessing PMD/PDL/PDG interactions that can cause waveform distortion and increase bit error rate.
- Standards developers and researchers using the report as a state-of-the-art reference for PMD measurement challenges in OAs.
