Craft Identification Number (CIN) Structure The amendment specifies that a craft identification number must be a unique 14-character string with a hyphen, formatted according to the standard's requirements. The format ensures clarity and uniformity across all small crafts.
Manufacturer’s Identification Code The updated standard clarifies that the three-character manufacturer’s identification code is issued by a national authority, either directly to the manufacturer or a recognized organization. To minimize errors, the numerals 0 and 1 are excluded from the code.
Serial Number Composition Each craft receives a five-character serial number made up of numerals and/or letters. Certain letters (I, O, Q) are omitted to avoid misinterpretation.
Correction of Identification Errors The amendment introduces a specific clause requiring manufacturers to correct both visible and hidden identification numbers on the craft in the event of an error. This change helps preserve the integrity of boat identification records.
Manufacturers of Small Craft Boat builders and OEMs must apply the revised craft identification structure to all newly built small crafts, ensuring each vessel has a unique and traceable identifier.
National Regulatory Authorities Authorities are responsible for assigning manufacturer’s codes and enforcing compliance, supporting effective registration, safety recalls, and theft prevention.
Maritime Safety and Law Enforcement Accurate and consistent identification numbers facilitate vessel tracking, accident investigations, and regulatory checks, enhancing safety and legal enforcement.
Owners and Operators Clear identification supports boat registration, insurance documentation, and resale, providing assurance of authenticity and history.
