Overview
ISO 10245-1:2021 - "Cranes - Limiting and indicating devices - Part 1: General" defines the general requirements for limiting and indicating devices fitted to cranes. It covers devices that restrict crane operation (limiters) and those that provide operational information (indicators) related to loads, motions, performance and environmental conditions. Part 1 sets the baseline principles and safety provisions common to all crane types; specific requirements for mobile, tower, jib, overhead and portal bridge cranes are given in Parts 2–5 of the ISO 10245 series.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and terminology: Aligns definitions with ISO 4306-1 and introduces terms such as rated capacity limiter (load limiter), rated capacity indicator, motion limiter, performance limiter, event recorder and data logger.
- Rated capacity devices: Requires rated capacity limiters/indicators on cranes ≥ 3 t (recommended ≥ 1 t). Devices must automatically operate for all crane configurations and retain settings after power interruptions.
- Device selection & installation:
- Selection must account for rated capacity, operating environment (temperature, humidity, vibration), crane characteristics and electromagnetic compatibility.
- Installation must not reduce structural strength; forces and stopping distances from limiter operation must be within crane design limits.
- Devices must withstand shock, vibration and corrosion-protection processes (painting).
- Functionality & testing:
- Periodic functional checks must be possible without applying loads.
- Design allows testing with overloads without permanent effect; where disconnection is required, facilities to reset/check are mandatory.
- Anti-tampering measures (locking, double action) to prevent accidental setting changes.
- Limiters and indicators covered: hoisting/ lowering limiters, derricking limiter, slewing limiter, telescoping limiter, travelling/traversing limiter, working space limiter, slack rope limiter, motion and performance limiters.
- Data recording: Event recorder and data logger requirements are included consistent with Parts 2–5; these record crane condition and control information.
- Support requirements: Inspection, maintenance, operator training and information for use are mandated.
Applications and who uses this standard
ISO 10245-1:2021 is used by:
- Crane manufacturers and OEMs - to specify, design and install compliant limiting and indicating systems.
- Safety and site engineers - to select appropriate devices for environments and operating profiles.
- Maintenance teams and inspectors - for testing, inspection and maintenance routines.
- Operators and training providers - to understand indicator functionality and required training.
- Standards and compliance officers - to ensure conformity with international safety requirements.
