Overview
ISO 1035-2:1980 - "Hot-rolled steel bars - Part 2: Dimensions of square bars" is an International Standard that defines the metric series dimensions for hot-rolled steel square bars. The standard supplies practical dimensional data used in manufacturing, procurement and quality control, including standard widths, sectional areas and masses per unit length. It is part of the ISO 1035 series for hot-rolled bars and was published as the first edition in 1980.
Key topics
- Dimensional table (Table 1): Lists preferred and second-preference widths (in mm), corresponding sectional areas (cm²) and masses per unit length (kg/m). Mass values are provided for information and are calculated using a steel density of 7.85 kg/dm³.
- Corner radii (Table 2): Specifies maximum corner radii for square bars. The permitted radius increases with bar size (small sizes have radii on the order of ~1 mm, larger sizes up to several millimetres - e.g., around 3–4 mm for the largest sizes listed).
- Tolerances: Unless otherwise ordered, dimensional tolerances for square bars follow the normal tolerances given in ISO 1035-4 (Hot-rolled steel bars - Part 4: Tolerances). Tighter tolerances require separate specification.
- Informative data: Mass per unit length and sectional areas are provided for design and estimation; these values are for information only and depend on the density assumption noted above.
Applications
ISO 1035-2 is used where consistent, interchangeable hot-rolled square bars are required:
- Steel mill production planning and rolling mill settings
- Procurement and supply specifications for distributors and raw-material suppliers
- Mechanical and structural engineers who specify standard bar sizes for design and bill of materials
- Fabrication shops and metalworking industries that require known sectional areas and mass for calculations (weight estimation, material handling, machining allowances)
- Quality control and inspection to verify dimensional conformity to the metric series
Who should use this standard
- Manufacturers of hot-rolled steel bars and long-products
- Purchasers and procurement engineers specifying raw steel stock
- Design and structural engineers, estimators, and workshop planners
- Quality and inspection personnel in steel and metalworking industries
