Overview
ISO 10438-2:2007 - part of the ISO 10438 series - specifies requirements for special-purpose oil systems used in the petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries. Intended to be used in conjunction with ISO 10438-1 (General requirements), this part covers oil systems that supply lubrication oil, seal oil or both to equipment such as compressors, gears, pumps and drivers. It was developed jointly with API 614 and provides vendor, purchaser and engineering guidance for design, manufacture, testing and documentation.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Design life and reliability: equipment shall be designed for a minimum service life of 20 years and at least 5 years of uninterrupted operation.
- System scope: one oil system per equipment train unless otherwise specified; option for separate or combined seal and lube systems (purchaser to specify).
- Console and layout: systems may be separate consoles or integrated with equipment baseplates; arrangement must allow maintenance without interrupting operation.
- Major components: requirements and construction expectations for baseplates, oil reservoirs, pumps and pump drivers, coolers, filters, transfer valves, accumulators, overhead tanks, drain traps and degassing drums.
- Materials and safety: external pressure-containing components must be steel; pressure vessels and certain items to comply with specified pressure design codes and, if required, be code-stamped.
- Piping and instrumentation: detailed expectations for oil piping, instrument and process piping; instrumentation and electrical arrangements (Arrangement 1–3) are specified.
- Operational safety: seal-oil systems must operate safely before process start-up and across the full specified operating range (including transients, start-up and shop tests).
- Purchaser responsibilities: purchaser must specify operating points, oil characteristics, sound pressure limits, clearance/access requirements, and locations for double block-and-bleed valves when needed.
- Inspection, testing and vendor data: requirements for inspection, factory testing, shipment preparation and vendor documentation; Annexes include datasheets, P&IDs and an inspector’s checklist.
Applications and users
Who uses ISO 10438-2:2007:
- Design and rotating-equipment engineers specifying lubrication and seal-oil systems
- OEMs and vendors of oil consoles, pumps, coolers and filters
- Procurement teams and purchasers defining contract requirements
- Operations, reliability and maintenance teams implementing system installations and tests
- Inspectors and third-party certifiers validating compliance
Typical applications:
- Compressor and gas-driver seal systems
- Lube-oil consoles for gearboxes, pumps and drivers
- Special-purpose oil support systems at onshore and offshore hydrocarbon facilities
