Overview
ISO 10540-1:2003 - "Animal and vegetable fats and oils - Determination of phosphorus content - Part 1: Colorimetric method" - specifies a standardized colorimetric procedure for measuring phosphorus levels in animal and vegetable oils and fats. The method relies on ashing the sample with magnesium hydroxycarbonate, dissolving the residue in dilute HCl, and quantifying phosphorus by the molybdenum blue colorimetric reaction measured spectrophotometrically at 720 nm. Note: this colorimetric procedure is not suitable for commercial lecithin, which requires ashing at 800 °C.
