Overview
ISO 10972-1:1998 - "Cranes - Requirements for mechanisms - Part 1: General" is an international standard that establishes general requirements, guidance and design rules for mechanisms and related components of cranes and lifting appliances. It applies to crane types defined in the ISO 4306 series and focuses on safe, reliable mechanical design and installation practice. The part explicitly excludes detailed proof-of-competence calculations for limit states (yield, fatigue, wear).

- Gears must meet ISO 6336 (spur/helical) and ISO 10300-1 (bevel) principles, be properly lubricated and enclosed when hazardous. Gear cases must be rigid, oil-tight and serviceable.
- Rope and chain drives
- Classification and calculations per ISO 4301-1 and ISO 4308-1; drums and equalizers require suitable material and arrangements to avoid uneven load distribution.
- Serviceability and safety
- Emphasis on maintenance access (see ISO 11660-1), instruction for installation, testing and component supplier recommendations.
