ISO 11140-5:2007 specifies requirements and test methods for Class 2 chemical indicators used in Bowie and Dick‑type air removal tests. These indicators evaluate the effectiveness of air removal during the pre‑vacuum (air removal) phase of pre‑vacuum steam sterilization cycles. - Transfer and stability: Transfer of indicator agent to the test pack must not compromise results; indicators must comply for the declared shelf life (accelerated ageing procedures allowed).
- Packaging and labelling: In addition to ISO 11140‑1 requirements, indicators and packaging shall be clearly marked for AIR REMOVAL tests.
- Normative test methods: Annexes A–G define measurement methods, fault simulation, standard test pack and steam exposure apparatus.
