Overview
ISO 11252:2013 - "Lasers and laser-related equipment - Laser device - Minimum requirements for documentation" defines the minimum documentation, marking and labelling required for laser devices and laser products classified under IEC 60825-1. It sets out what manufacturers and suppliers must provide in technical data sheets and user information for laser devices (including laser diodes) and for laser systems destined for integration into products or processing machines. The standard augments - but does not replace - IEC 60825-1 requirements.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and applicability
- Applies to laser devices defined in ISO 11145 and laser systems intended for integration per IEC 60825-1 and ISO 11553 series.
- Not intended for ready-to-use complete products enclosed to prevent laser emission or for incoherent light sources covered by IEC 62471.
- Technical data sheet content
- Mandatory identification: model, manufacturer/supplier, device type and intended use.
- Beam output characteristics to be reported (e.g., beam width/waist, divergence, spectral characteristics, maximum/nominal power), with referenced measurement methods (ISO 11146, ISO 11554, ISO 13695, etc.).
- Power supply and interface details: electrical (AC/DC/battery), non-electrical power sources, connectors and I/O signal specifications.
- Liquids/gases: type, quality, flow/pressure and connector interfaces where applicable.
- Environmental and mechanical data: operating temperature, humidity, IP rating (IEC 60529), dimensions, mass, beam position references and mechanical interfaces.
- Safety and residual risk information
- List of hazards (optical radiation, secondary radiation, electrical, chemical, LGACs, fire/explosion, noise, ergonomics).
- Required safety information, warnings, labelling and instructions consistent with IEC 60825-1 and other applicable standards (including IP code and control-system safety per ISO 13849-1).
- Residual risk mitigation: recommended engineering controls, PPE, procedures and maintenance guidance.
- Marking, labelling and user information
- Clear requirements for transport, installation, operation, maintenance, disposal and noise declarations (ISO 11553-3).
- Annex provides a model technical data sheet.
Applications and who uses it
- Primary users
- Laser manufacturers and suppliers preparing product documentation and datasheets.
- OEMs and system integrators embedding lasers into machines or products.
- Machine builders and safety engineers ensuring compliance during integration.
- Technical writers, procurement officers and regulatory/compliance teams.
- Practical uses
- Producing compliant technical data sheets and user manuals.
- Specifying interfaces and environmental limits for system integration.
- Preparing labelling, warnings and safety information for installers and end users.
- Supporting conformity assessment and supplier documentation reviews.
