Overview
ISO 12017:2021 defines standardized test methods for quality control of extruded poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) double- and triple-skin flat sheets. It applies to colourless and coloured, transparent, translucent and opaque PMMA grades (homopolymers and MMA copolymers with ≥80 % MMA). The standard targets extruded sheets with a minimum width of 600 mm and is primarily intended for building and agricultural uses (notably greenhouses).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and materials: Applies to PMMA homopolymers and suitable copolymers; additives such as UV absorbers and pigments are allowed.
- Standard test conditions: Measurements under 23 °C ± 2 °C and (50 ± 5) % RH (ISO 291 referenced).
- Sampling and specimen prep: Sampling procedures should be agreed by parties; ISO 28590 and ISO 2859-1 are recommended. Specimen preparation follows ISO 2818 where applicable.
- Dimensional tests:
- Total thickness (measured every 200 mm across extrusion width; accuracy to 0.1 mm), minimum/maximum thickness, skin and rib thicknesses.
- Width and length measurements to 0.1 mm.
- Rib geometry (spacing, angles) and mass per unit area.
- Physical and performance tests:
- Curvature (sheet surface and edge), thermal resistance (steady-state), three-point bending (mechanical behavior and chemical compatibility), and internal stress evaluation.
- Optical properties: luminous transmittance, colour and appearance (Annex A covers luminous transmittance determination).
- Durability tests: weathering (e.g., xenon-arc per ISO 4892-2), fire resistance, sound insulation (ISO 10140 series referenced), and condensate formation.
- Chemical compatibility with gaskets and sealants (including a bending test in Annex B).
- Reporting: Test reports must reference ISO 12017:2021 and include identifying sample details and measured values (with stated accuracies).
Applications and who uses it
ISO 12017:2021 is used by:
- Manufacturers and extrusion plants for in‑process quality control and specification compliance of double- and triple-skin PMMA sheets.
- Independent test laboratories performing dimensional, optical, thermal and mechanical testing.
- Specifiers, architects and greenhouse designers requiring certified material properties for building envelopes and agricultural glazing.
- Procurement and certification bodies verifying conformity with industry performance requirements.
Practical value: standardized, repeatable test methods enable consistent product specifications, reliable performance comparisons, and clearer contractual requirements between suppliers and buyers.
