Overview
ISO 12044:2014 specifies chamfer dimensions for the outer ring non-thrust side of single-row angular contact ball bearings where those dimensions differ from ISO 15. The standard defines the nominal chamfer (r1) and the minimum single chamfer dimension (r1s min) for specified diameter series and contact angles. It is applicable to bearings in diameter series 9, 0, and 2 for contact angles up to and including 30°, and to diameter series 2 and 3 for contact angles over 30°.

Key topics
- Scope and applicability
- Limits applicability by diameter series and contact angle (α).
- Covers chamfer dimensions that differ from those in ISO 15.
- Symbols and terms
- Uses symbols defined in ISO 15241 and terms from ISO 5593: d (bore diameter), r1 (chamfer), r1s min, α (contact angle).
- Nominal chamfer values
- Table 1 in the standard lists r1s min values in millimetres for a range of bore diameters and diameter series.
- Chamfer application location is shown in Figure 1 (outer ring non-thrust side corner).
- Cross-references
- Advises use of ISO 582 for corresponding maximum single chamfer values and ISO 15 for general boundary dimensions.
Applications
- Ensures consistent bearing geometry for manufacturing, inspection and interchangeability of single-row angular contact ball bearings.
- Used in:
- Bearing design and engineering - to define mating ring interfaces and seatings.
- Production and machining - to set chamfer tooling and tolerances.
- Quality control and inspection - to verify chamfer dimensions on outer rings.
- Assembly and maintenance - to prevent interference and ensure adequate contact area (important for tandem mounting).
- Relevant to industries using precision bearings: automotive, aerospace, machine tools, robotics, and industrial equipment.
Who should use this standard
- Bearing manufacturers and designers
- Mechanical design engineers and CAD modelers
- Quality assurance and metrology personnel
- Purchasing/specification engineers and maintenance teams
