Overview
ISO 12670:2011 - "Thermal spraying - Components with thermally sprayed coatings - Technical supply conditions" specifies the technical supply conditions for parts that receive thermally sprayed coatings for manufacture or repair. It defines what must be documented, tested and agreed between purchaser and supplier when thermally sprayed coatings are delivered, and applies where quality requirements per ISO 14922-2 (full) or ISO 14922-3 (standard) are needed.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and documentation: The standard must be referenced on parts lists and in manufacturing/delivery instructions. It emphasises written specifications for the coating and the spray process.
- Manufacturer qualification: Suppliers must operate a quality management system, use qualified personnel (e.g., coordinators per ISO 12690, operators per ISO 14918), and maintain spraying equipment in a safe, verified condition.
- Specification of spray procedure (SOP): The spray mode of operation must be written, including all process parameters (e.g., relative motion or program ID for automated systems), surface preparation, post‑treatments (machining, sealing, heat treatment) and any required trial qualification (e.g., EN 15648).
- Materials control: Only materials listed in the coating specification may be used. Powders and wires must meet their respective delivery standards (ISO 14232 for powders, ISO 14919 for wires/rods). Material traceability, certificates and correct storage are required.
- Acceptance criteria: The coating specification must state measurable acceptance criteria such as thickness, adhesion (ISO 14916), hardness (ISO 6507‑1), porosity, roughness, structure and allowable imperfections. Special rules apply for corrosion‑protective coatings (see ISO 2063).
- Testing and sampling: Defines on‑part tests and companion specimen tests, sampling rules for production and single‑piece work, and required documentation of test results. Tables in the standard guide which tests are applied to finished parts vs. specimens.
Applications
ISO 12670 is applicable to:
- OEM manufacturing and repair shops that apply thermally sprayed coatings to functional parts
- Procurement and quality engineers who specify coating acceptance and supplier obligations
- Coating service providers establishing process specifications, qualification trials and inspection plans
- Industries using thermal spray for wear protection, erosion/corrosion resistance or dimensional restoration
