Overview
ISO 13076:2019 - Paints and varnishes: Lighting and procedure for visual assessments of coatings - specifies the lighting conditions and the procedure for visually assessing degraded areas, spots or other defects on or in coatings. It covers both natural and artificial illumination, defines minimum illuminance levels, and sets requirements for light sources (fluorescent lamps or LEDs). This standard is not applicable to visual colour comparison (see ISO 3668).

- Artificial lighting: Use a fluorescent lamp or a dull LED with a wide-angle source and aluminium-coated reflector. Colour temperature: 6 500 K (CIE D65) and CRI ≈ 90–100 (class 1A). Minimum illuminance at the surface: ≥ 750 lx.
- Procedure:
- Assess panels under specified illumination; panels may be inclined; defects often appear most clearly at the light/dark boundary created by the lamp.
- For arbitration and reproducibility, use precisely controlled artificial lighting because natural daylight varies.
- Measure illuminance after setting up the lamp or LED.
- Test report requirements:
- Include reference to ISO 13076:2019.
- State whether assessment was under natural or artificial lighting and, if artificial, provide details of the light source.
