Overview
ISO 13459:2012 - "Earth‑moving machinery - Trainer seat - Deflection limiting volume, space envelope and performance requirements" defines the laboratory test geometry, dimensional limits and performance criteria for trainer seats used in earth‑moving machinery. It specifies the trainer‑seat deflection limiting volume (DLV), the trainer space envelope, seat dimensions and practical requirements used when evaluating protective structures (ROPS/FOPS/top‑guard) on machines defined in ISO 6165. The standard excludes vibration effects for short‑term or temporary seats.

- Trainer DLV and orthogonal top head plane: Annex A defines the trainer DLV (an orthogonal approximation of a large seated trainer wearing a protective helmet). The orthogonal top head plane for FOPS is 270 mm × 330 mm.
- Seat dimensions and SIP reference: Trainer seat dimensions must meet the values in Table 1 and be referenced to the seat index point (SIP) per ISO 5353. Example values: seat cushion width/basic 360 mm, back cushion height/basic 400 mm; back cushion angle 0–15°.
- Trainer space envelope: Figure 1 provides required spatial clearances and minimum radii around the SIP for the trainer space envelope; seat adjustment/suspension is not required.
- Positioning and visibility: The trainer seat must be inside the operator’s station and must not intrude into sector of vision A (ISO 5006). It must permit observation of the operator and work environment without interfering with safe machine operation.
- ROPS/FOPS/top‑guard testing: ROPS requirements follow ISO 3471 or ISO 12117‑2 and FOPS/top‑guard follow ISO 3449 or ISO 10262, using the trainer DLV (Annexes A and B). Annex B permits the upper portion of the trainer DLV to rotate up to 15° and translate up to 50 mm to account for soft tissue deflection during tests.
- Materials, handholds and restraints: Materials must be flame‑retardant per ISO 20474‑1; a handhold (ISO 2867) must be within arm’s reach; restraint systems must meet ISO 6683.
- Labelling and measurement: If acceptance criteria are met, the ROPS/FOPS label shall reference ISO 13459. Measurement accuracy follows ISO 9248.
