Overview
ISO 1401:2016 specifies performance, design and testing requirements for rubber hoses for agricultural spraying. It covers three types of flexible rubber hose used for pressure spraying of agricultural chemicals and fertilizer products over a service temperature range of −10 °C to +60 °C. The standard defines construction, dimensional tolerances, physical properties, hydrostatic and ageing tests, marking and testing regimes to ensure safe, durable hose performance in agricultural sprayer systems.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Hose types and pressures
- Type A - maximum working pressure 1.0 MPa (10 bar)
- Type B - maximum working pressure 4.0 MPa (40 bar)
- Type C - maximum working pressure 6.0 MPa (60 bar)
- Construction
- Synthetic rubber lining, one or more textile reinforcement layers, natural or synthetic rubber cover.
- Dimensions & tolerances
- Nominal bores: 6.3, 8, 10, 12.5, 16, 20, 25 mm with specified inside diameter tolerances.
- Length tolerances per ISO 1307.
- Minimum thickness
- Types A/B: lining ≥ 1.6 mm, cover ≥ 1.0 mm.
- Type C: lining ≥ 2.0 mm, cover ≥ 1.6 mm.
- Material properties
- Tensile strength: lining and cover ≥ 7.0 MPa.
- Elongation at break: lining ≥ 200%, cover ≥ 250% (ISO 37).
- Fluid exposure and ageing
- After immersion in service fluid (ISO 1817): limits on volume increase (≤ 55%), tensile reduction (≤ 50%), elongation reduction (≤ 40%).
- Accelerated ageing (ISO 188): tensile and elongation reductions limited to ≤ 25% and ≤ 50% respectively.
- Hydrostatic and burst tests
- Proof and minimum bursting pressures specified per hose type (e.g., Type B: proof 8 MPa/80 bar; burst 16 MPa/160 bar).
- Hydrostatic testing after liquid-ageing (336 h) required.
- Functional tests
- Bending stiffness (ISO 10619-1): T/D ≥ 0.80 at bending radius = 10× nominal bore.
- Adhesion between components ≥ 1.5 kN/m (ISO 8033).
- Ozone resistance: no cracking (ISO 7326).
- Testing & quality
- Defines routine, type and production acceptance tests; type testing repeated at most every 5 years or after design/material changes.
- Marking
- Each metre marked with manufacturer ID, “ISO 1401:2016”, hose type, nominal bore, max working pressure (MPa/bar) and quarter/year of manufacture.
Applications
- Specification for hoses used in agricultural sprayer systems (boom lines, pump connections, handguns) conveying pesticides, herbicides and liquid fertilizers.
- Used to ensure safety, chemical compatibility, pressure integrity and durability of hoses in field spraying operations.
- Supports procurement, certification, product development and field maintenance decisions.
Who uses this standard
- Hose manufacturers and tooling designers
- Agricultural equipment OEMs and sprayer manufacturers
- Quality managers, test laboratories and certification bodies
- Procurement specialists and farm operations managers seeking compliant hoses
