Overview
ISO 14451-2:2013, "Pyrotechnic articles - Pyrotechnic articles for vehicles - Part 2: Test methods," establishes uniform test methods for pyrotechnic articles used in road vehicles. The standard defines a set of laboratory procedures to verify design, mechanical robustness, environmental resistance and safe behaviour of automotive pyrotechnic components (for example igniters, gas generators and pretensioners) under realistic stresses.
Key Topics
The standard specifies test methods and relevant conditions, including:
-
Verification of design and documentation
Manufacturers must supply descriptive documentation (purpose, sketches, mass, pyrotechnic composition, electrical characteristics and proposed labelling) to be verified by visual inspection.
-
Drop test
Intended to detect damage or hazardous effects from impacts. Specified drop height: 1 m onto a steel impact plate; orientation tests across main axes.
-
Vibration and temperature test
Assesses resistance to mechanical vibration and thermal cycling. Random vibration profile with an RMS of 1,34 g and temperature control (tolerance ±2.5 °C); tests may be simultaneous or sequential.
-
Thermal humidity cycling test
Evaluates performance after humidity and temperature cycles - typical procedure uses 30 cycles in a climatic chamber; reference temperature build‑up time can be determined per Annex A.
-
Electrostatic discharge (ESD) test
Demonstrates immunity to electrostatic discharges without unintended ignition. Uses an ESD generator (contact discharge up to 8 kV nominal) with specified circuit elements and waveform verification.
-
Fire test
Defines exposure to flame (propane burner) to observe behaviour under fire conditions; apparatus and burner distance (e.g., 400 ±10 mm) are specified.
-
Other tests
Igniter test, tank test, functioning test and recording requirements. Normative annexes cover temperature build‑up time (A), Probit (PBBS) test (B) and Bruceton method (C).
Applications and Users
ISO 14451-2 is used by:
- Automotive OEMs and suppliers for design verification and supplier qualification of airbag inflators, seatbelt pretensioners, igniters and other pyrotechnic devices.
- Independent test laboratories and certification bodies performing safety and compliance testing.
- Safety engineers and regulatory authorities assessing in‑vehicle pyrotechnic safety and conformity.
Benefits include consistent test processes, improved product safety, clearer supplier communication, and support for compliance with vehicle passive safety requirements.
