Overview
ISO 16426:2002 - "Fasteners - Quality assurance system" defines requirements for a fastener quality assurance system to be implemented by manufacturers and distributors. The standard is a prevention-focused system intended to reduce or prevent production of non-conforming fasteners and to approach a zero-defect objective for specified characteristics. It covers the process from receipt of raw material through manufacturing, packaging and delivery to the distributor or end user.

- Control plan & advanced quality planning: Selected product characteristics must be included in a written control plan that covers prototype, initial and full production and identifies process control points.
- Selected characteristics, ppm and Cpk: Manufacturer and customer agree on target non-conforming parts per million (ppm) and/or C value (Cpk) for critical characteristics; these drive process controls and acceptance criteria.
- Traceability: Full traceability is required-manufacturing lot numbers (and trace numbers when used) must allow tracing back to heat/cast numbers and processing records. Documentation must be retained for at least 10 years.
- Documentation: For each manufacturing lot, documentation (available on request) shall include at minimum: heat analysis (chemical composition), heat treatment records (if applicable), mechanical properties, performance characteristics (if applicable), dimensions and finish.
- Lot integrity and handling: Manufacturing lots must not be commingled. Fasteners should be delivered in original, sealed packaging unless otherwise agreed; repackaging or alteration transfers responsibility to the distributor performing those actions.
- Non-conforming lots: Defined disposition options include scrap, 100% inspection and removal of defects, rework/reprocessing, or written release with customer agreement. Reworked lots must be re-inspected for affected characteristics.
- Roles & responsibilities: Clear allocation of responsibilities for manufacturer, distributor (alteration, repackaging, pass-through), and user, including information the user must supply at order (selected product characteristics).
