Overview
ISO 17162:2014 defines a standardized method for determining the nominal compressive strength of advanced monolithic technical ceramics (fine/advanced ceramics) at room temperature. It provides requirements for test machines, jigs, test-piece geometry and surface preparation, measurement methods, and reporting so that compressive strength data are comparable for material development, quality control and component design.

- Test machine: Must meet safety and accuracy requirements of ISO 7500-1 (grade 1), be able to apply constant loading or displacement rates, continuously record force and maximum force, and include shatter protection.
- Test jig and alignment:
- Compression platens aligned to load line; loading surfaces parallel within 0.01 mm per 10 mm and perpendicular to load line.
- One platen may have a calotte for self-alignment.
- Use loading blocks between platens and specimen to minimize misfit and protect platens; loading-block contact area at least five times the specimen end-face area.
- Hardness and Young’s modulus of platens/loading blocks should be ≥400 GPa (e.g., silicon carbide or cemented carbide).
- Measurement: Dimensional measurements using a micrometer per ISO 3611 with resolution ≤0.1% of measured dimension.
- Test-piece geometry and tolerances:
- Square cross-section: side (4 ± 0.1) mm; or cylindrical: diameter (4.5 ± 0.1) mm.
- Height: (8 ± 0.2) mm; end faces parallel to 0.2% relative to side/diameter.
