Overview
ISO 17325-4:2018 - Ships and marine technology - Marine environment protection - Oil booms - Part 4: Auxiliary equipment - defines basic requirements for the design, layout and application of oil boom accessories (auxiliary equipment). It provides guidance for manufacturers and users on common boom accessories - how they should be constructed, marked and operated - while reminding users to establish applicable safety and regulatory procedures.

- Scope and general requirements
- Auxiliary equipment shall be used only for the designated boom application; misuse requires force and safety assessment and supplier approval.
- Manufacturers shall provide strength and dimension calculations on request. Nameplates must state maximum gross and net weight including installed components.
- Boom reels (winders)
- Materials must be oil- and seawater-resistant and protected from UV.
- Structural strength must account for forces from wind, current, waves, towing and transport. See ISO 17325-1 for formulas.
- Reels require a brake able to withstand 1.25× the maximum deployment/retrieval torque; connection strength between boom and drum should be less than the force that would capsize the reel.
- Manual drive limited to double-acting, self-locking gears with maximum driving force 250 N; hydraulic drives with self-locking motors are recommended.
- Transport features: ISO 668-compatible base frames, ISO 1161 corner fittings, forklift pockets per ISO 1496-1; lifting points sized for gross weight with a safety factor of ≥ 3.0. Use WLL (working load limit) terminology.
- Inflators for inflatable booms
- Air flow, delivery pressure and connectors must match the boom design. Excess pressure can damage or impair performance.
- Operational guidance includes securing boom during inflation, adequate hose length/work space, hearing protection, and the option for deflators to speed retrieval.
- Water pumps (beach sealing booms)
- Pumps must be self-priming and seawater-resistant; strainers recommended to prevent intake of solids; flow and pressure must suit the boom to avoid damage.
- Other accessories
- The standard covers boom anchoring, towing and mooring gear, tidal compensators and power units, providing design and operational considerations for each item.
