Overview
ISO 17672:2024 - "Brazing - Filler metals" is the international standard that specifies compositional ranges and technical delivery conditions for a series of brazing filler metals. The document divides filler metals into seven composition-related classes (see Tables 5–13) and covers filler-metal constituents of composite products (for example, flux-coated rods, pastes or plastic tapes). Melting temperatures given are approximate and for information only. The standard also addresses special vacuum impurity requirements, chemical analysis, product designation, dimensions, marking and packaging.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Composition limits: Detailed compositional ranges are defined in Tables 5–13. Elements shown with a range from 0 to a value may be absent or present up to that limit.
- Seven classes of filler metals: Classification is by composition (Annex A provides codification and major-element notes).
- Special vacuum requirements: Lower impurity limits (Table 1) apply for some Ag, Pd and Au filler metals used in vacuum brazing or vacuum service; V-suffix codification and grade 1/2 indicate required purity.
- Chemical analysis and testing: Routine analysis is required for elements with specified limits; further analysis is required if unnamed impurities are suspected. A spatter test for oxide content in vacuum applications is included (Clause 6).
- Designation and codification: Two coding options are provided (see Annex A and ISO 3677 references). Example formats: “Filler metal ISO 17672‑Al 112” or ISO 17672‑B‑Al88Si‑575/585.
- Technical delivery conditions: Defines product types (rod, wire, foil, powders), dimensional tolerances (foils, rods, wires), surface condition, flux-coatings, marking, packaging and product certificates (ISO 14344 referenced).
- Health and safety: Precautions and hazard marking requirements for packaging are addressed.
Practical applications and who uses ISO 17672
ISO 17672 is used by:
- Welding and brazing engineers and metallurgists specifying filler metals for manufacturing and repair
- Manufacturers and suppliers of brazing filler metals (rod, wire, foil, powders, pastes)
- Procurement teams and quality managers who require product designation, certificates and traceability
- Designers and fabricators in industries such as HVAC, automotive, electronics and general metal fabrication where standard brazing filler metals are used
Note: Precious metal jewellery, aerospace and dental applications often use specialized filler metals covered by other International Standards.
