Overview
ISO 19076:2023 - Leather: Measurement of leather surface - Electronic techniques defines a standardized method for measuring the surface area of leather and leather parts using electronic measuring machines. The standard covers flexible dry and wet leather (see Annex E) that can be fully distended on the measuring line or surface. It specifies measurement principles, machine types, verification procedures and reporting requirements to ensure consistent, traceable leather surface measurements for quality control, trade and legal metrology.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Measurement principle: Uses a linear or two‑dimensional array of uniformly spaced opto‑electronic sensors or digital cameras. Two sensor operating modes are described: interruption of a source–receiver beam and image capture by a camera. Digital signals are processed to generate elementary surface units and compute total area.
- Machine types: Classified types include:
- Type A Roller machines (A1 transport roller, A2 transport conveyor)
- Type B Conveyor machines (B1 standard, B2 vacuum tape)
- Type C Flatbed scanning machines
- Type D Camera (two‑dimensional array) machines
- Sensor and sampling rules:
- Maximum sensor spacing across the feed direction: 27 mm
- Measurement display in metric units with a scale interval of 1 dm² (testing resolution at least 0.1 dm²)
- Relationship between sensor spacing i and feed step p: i × p ≤ 1/400 of the minimum measurable surface
- Operational controls: Requirements for feed speed, leather orientation (whole, half, or cut pieces), longitudinal advancement sensing, and handling of feed reversals during measurement.
- Verification and quality: Normative annexes define calibrated template manufacturing (Annex A), verification procedures using templates (Annex B), and record keeping (Annex C). Informative annexes cover repeatability/reproducibility (Annex D) and wet leather conditioning (Annex E).
- Reporting: Clause on test report contents (Clause 10) and requirements for indicating machine detecting width, measurement conditions and results.
Applications
- Routine area measurement in tanneries and finishing plants for inventory, costing and yield calculations
- Quality control and inspection in leather manufacturing and footwear/upholstery supply chains
- Measurement for commercial transactions and legal metrology (noting applicability under EU Directive 2014/32/EU where relevant)
- Calibration, verification and commissioning of leather measuring equipment by laboratories and machine manufacturers
Who Should Use This Standard
- Leather technologists, QA/QC engineers and laboratory personnel
- Manufacturers of electronic measuring machines (roller, conveyor, scanner, camera systems)
- Standards and conformity assessment bodies, and calibration laboratories
- Traders and specifiers needing traceable area measurement procedures
