Overview
ISO 19134:2007 - Geographic information - Location-based services - Multimodal routing and navigation defines a conceptual schema and data types for implementing multimodal location-based services (LBS) for routing and navigation. The standard specifies the data structures and associated operations used to support routing across two or more transportation modes (walking, driving, transit, taxi, park‑and‑ride, etc.), including fixed‑route and scheduled services. It is designed to describe web service interfaces and request/response data types for mobile clients and web‑resident proxy applications, though it is not limited to that environment.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Multimodal network model: aggregation of single‑mode networks into a combined network (MM_MultimodalNetwork) with MM_SingleModeLink, MM_TransferNode and transfer links where modal changes occur.
- Data types and operations: conceptual schemas for routing, navigation, transfers, schedules and route information; types are extensions of ISO 19133 (tracking and navigation) and align with ISO 19107 (spatial schema) and ISO 19108 (temporal schema).
- Routing and navigation services: definitions of service types and request/response pairs to support mobile client interactions and proxy applications.
- Cost functions: mechanisms to associate additive, non‑negative measures (time, distance, monetary or composite metrics) with route parts to compute optimal (minimal cost) routes; further guidance is provided in Annex B.
- Constraints and advisories: representation of sequence constraints, transfer restrictions and other routing constraints important for multimodal itineraries.
- Conformance and testing: conformance classes depend on the declaring entity; record implementations and service interface requirements are defined, with an abstract test suite in Annex A.
Applications and who uses it
ISO 19134 is practical for:
- Transit agencies and operators integrating schedules and transfers into route planners.
- GIS and mapping vendors implementing multimodal routing engines and data models.
- Location‑based service and mobile application developers delivering multimodal trip planning and turn‑by‑turn navigation.
- Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) integrators linking fixed‑route, schedule and road network information.
- Research and standards bodies harmonizing spatial, temporal and routing schemas.
Typical uses include multimodal trip planning, urban mobility apps, park‑and‑ride optimization, and intercity itinerary planning where transfers, schedules and composite cost metrics influence route choice.
