Overview
ISO 19932-2:2013 specifies test methods for verifying the requirements of ISO 19932-1 for knapsack sprayers used with plant protection products. It covers lever-operated, compression and engine- or motor-driven knapsack sprayers that use hydraulic pressure atomisation and have a nominal volume > 3 L. The standard is intended primarily for agricultural and horticultural applications and explicitly excludes knapsack mistblowers (see ISO 28139).
Key topics and technical requirements
ISO 19932-2 sets out laboratory and bench test procedures to confirm safety, durability and environmental performance. Important technical areas include:
- Test liquids and equipment - requirements for test water, measuring cylinders, timers, pressure supplies and example test devices (preconditioning, shut-off, strap, drop and filling devices).
- General test conditions - ambient conditions, specimen preparation, assembly and initial inspection.
- Functional tests:
- Shut-off device reliability - cyclic operation under pressure to detect failures and leakage.
- Spray liquid output - measurement of output rate at specified pressures and verification against handbook values.
- Load-carrying straps and fixation points - dynamic strap/drop tests to assess attachment durability.
- Stability - checks on tipping/standing stability empty and full.
- Contents gauge and total volume - accuracy of tank graduation marks and determination of total/nominal volume.
- Filling rate and splash/splatter - controlled fill procedure and measurement of spilled/splashed liquid.
- Pressure and leakage tests, centre of gravity, and emptying procedures.
- Specific tests by sprayer type - additional preconditioning, drop and deposit/residual liquid tests tailored for lever-operated, engine-driven and compression sprayers.
- Test reporting - minimum content for test reports (normative Annex F) and informative examples of test devices (Annexes A–E).
Applications and users
ISO 19932-2 is practical for:
- Manufacturers and designers validating product performance and compliance with ISO 19932-1.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies performing type testing, quality control and conformity assessment.
- Regulators and procurement officers specifying performance requirements for agricultural equipment.
- R&D and safety engineers improving ergonomics, leak prevention and environmental containment.
Using these test methods helps ensure operator safety, reduce unintended dispersal of plant protection products and support reliable product claims.
