Overview
ISO 20929:2025 - Tools for pressing: Heel guidings in large stamping and forming dies - specifies standardized dimensions, materials and designation rules for lateral heel guidings (also called side friction plates) used in large and medium stamping and forming dies. The standard gives example assemblies, mounting recommendations and an ordering example to ensure interoperable, safe and durable guiding components in press tools.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Dimensions for lateral friction plates (heel guidings) and example applications for guiding upper and lower die shoes.
- Dimensional data: A range of standardized sizes is provided (see Table 1) to cover narrow/wide and short/long plates; example longitudinal lengths in the standard include 250–630 mm. General tolerance: ISO 2768-m.
- Surface and edges: Surface finish specified per ISO 21920‑1; undefined shape edges per ISO 13715. Solid-lubricant inserts are required on the friction surface.
- Materials and heat treatment:
- Steel option: C45E (per ISO 683‑1) with solid-lubricant inserts; superficial hardening ~1 mm to ~58 HRC.
- Bronze option: self-lubricating bronze (per EN 1982) with solid-lubricant inserts.
- Lubricant inserts must cover 20–25% of the friction surface.
- Fastening / mounting: Mounting patterns for three or four screws are shown; use tapped holes for plates transporting masses ≥ 15 kg. Standard screw type: ISO 4762 (socket head cap screws).
- Design guidance: Heel guidings are suited to guide plates, absorb shear loads (unlike round guides) and immobilize die shoes during transport. For very high lateral forces a clamping element (serre-flancs) is recommended instead of a single friction plate.
Practical applications
- Standardizes components used in:
- Large stamping and forming dies for automotive, appliance and heavy‑gauge sheet production
- Press tool design and manufacture (tool shops and foundries)
- Die maintenance, retrofit and spare‑parts procurement
- Benefits: improved interchangeability, predictable wear behavior, safer transport/handling of dies, and easier assembly and commissioning.
Who should use this standard
- Die/tool designers and engineers
- Toolmakers and press manufacturers
- Maintenance teams and procurement specialists specifying spare parts
- Foundries and plate fabricators producing die shoes and guiding components
