Overview
ISO 21455:2020 - "Mobile elevating work platforms - Operator's controls - Actuation, displacement, location and method of operation" specifies performance, location, marking and operational methods for operator controls on MEWPs (mobile elevating work platforms). The standard focuses on operator safety and ergonomics and applies to all controls used by an operator, including finger, thumb, hand and foot operated controls.

- For jurisdictions permitting 0.9 m minimum guardrail height, controls may be located 155 mm below the top of the guardrails.
- Foot controls must be positioned to minimize twisting or turning to reach them.
- Spacing and protection:
- When controls need simultaneous hand operation, total separation shall not exceed 760 mm.
- Minimum separation distances between individual controls are specified; provisions for dividers or shrouds are included.
- Layout, grouping and marking:
- Requirements for control panel construction, grouping (Group A / Group B MEWPs), multi-functional/multi-purpose controls, mode selection and marking using text or symbols are covered.
- Operational characteristics: Movement zones, activation methods, stacked/banked lever behavior, and function enable controls are defined to reduce inadvertent activation.
